ATLANTA, GA – Asian Americans Advancing Justice, a network of four independent Asian American civil rights organizations, condemns the Trump administration’s plan to escalate visa revocations for Chinese students and restrict future student visa applications based on overbroad and vague criteria that includes surveillance of social media posts and desire to study in specific fields. This targeted attack on Chinese students is xenophobic and harms the U.S. as a whole.

This change follows a pattern of actions by the administration that abuses national security pretexts to create overbroad and sweeping policies that harm students seeking educational opportunities. This ultimately does a disservice to the educational institutions and communities students are a part of and the very fabric of our country.

Public and private colleges and universities all across the U.S. welcome Chinese students for both undergraduate and graduate studies and research. Students educated in the U.S. often continue their contributions in this country, but current and future students may now find their paths blocked.

This announcement comes amid continued abuse of power to use visa revocations as a political tool to silence free speech and forcibly remove individuals from the country without due process.

We demand that the administration call off these policy changes, halt the damage done to students, colleges and universities, and stop placing unnecessary limitations on the potential of individuals seeking both opportunity and contribution.
