Dear friends,

It is with immense gratitude and a heart full of hope that I step into the role of Executive Director at Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Atlanta. My journey to this moment has been shaped by the experiences and values I carry from my hometown of Lahore, Pakistan, to my home of nearly three decades here in Atlanta. Just like the civil rights movement of the 1960s, Atlanta is where my passion for civil rights was ignited.

Throughout my 7 years as a civil rights attorney and advocate, I’ve witnessed the power of transformative justice, particularly in working alongside progressive, immigrant, indigenous, and Black led groups.  Together, I know that we can disrupt the structures of white supremacy and institutional racism that persist in our society. We can forge a more equitable future where justice isn't just an ideal but a living reality for all.

Advocating for the rights and interests of the Asian American community is not just a professional mission—it's a personal commitment born from my own experiences. As an immigrant and global citizen myself,  I have personal stakes in making sure that Georgia is an inclusive and just place for everyone.

And my immigration story informs my leadership and my dedication to Advancing Justice -Atlanta’s work. During my travels as a teen, I witnessed disparities in wealth distribution in Pakistan and the tangible impacts of climate change on communities in both Pakistan and Bangladesh. These experiences not only broadened my perspective but also revealed similar injustices in the United States.

The same injustices, the same inequities, the same exploitation, and still, the same transformative resistance from our communities. I’ve been inspired by each and every one of you, our community members, and your dedication to challenging the institutionalized injustices perpetuated by capitalism, colonialism, and white supremacy.

Together, let us continue on this journey towards justice, equity, and transformation. I invite you to share your stories and dreams for our community, and to work side by side with us at Advancing Justice-Atlanta to create a future where every voice is heard and every life is valued.

In hope and solidarity,

Murtaza Khwaja
