2021년 3월 16일, 메트로 애틀랜타에 위치한 세 곳의 스파에서 여섯 명의 아시안 여성 노동자를 포함한, 여덟 명이 사망했습니다. 이 비극적 사건의 1주기를 추모하며, 희생자들과, 생존자들, 그리고 그들의 가족들을 기립니다.

모두가 함께 비극에 애도하며 대책을 강구하는 과정에서 우리는 희생자와 그 가족들, 본 사건으로 지금 이 순간에도 충격 속에 아파하고 있는 희생자와 유가족 분들의 필요를 우선적으로 고려해야 합니다. 애도하며 추모하는 가운데 서로를 보살피며, 힐링과 평화를 함께 찾아가야 하겠습니다. 지난 1년 동안 희생자와 그 가족들의 필요를 우선으로 고려해주시며 물심양면으로 도움을 수많은 지역과 전국의 단체에 감사를 드립니다.

우리는 사건 관련 피해자와 직접적인 영향을 받은 이들을 위해 지원금을 모금하였고, 관련 서비스를 지원 하였습니다. 보다 넓은 커뮤니티들을 위해 우리 어르신들의 지혜와 지역 사회의 문화에서 영감을 얻어, 함께 치유하는 과정을 지속 하는 중에 있습니다. 또한 우리 모두가 안전한 지역사회에서 살 수 있도록, 폭력과 혐오의 근본 원인을 해결하는 정책과 해법을 찾아 목소리를 내고 있습니다.

애틀랜타 스파 총격 사건뿐 아니라 조지아주와 미 전역에서 일어나고 있는 아시안 아메리칸에 대한 지속적인 폭력, 여성 혐오, 인종차별을 경험하면서 느끼고 있는 상실과 슬픔, 트라우마를  함께 헤쳐나가도록 우리 커뮤니티와 고통을 함께 나누며 나아가고 있습니다. 최근 뉴욕에서 몇 주 간격으로 일어난 미셸 앨리사 고 와 크리스틴 유나 리의 잔인한 살인사건은 아시아계 여성, 인종에 기초한 차별과 폭력에 관한 공포와 근심을 우리 안에 다시 불러일으키고 있습니다. 앨버커키, 뉴멕시코에서는 아시아 스파 강도사건으로 2명의 아시아계 노동자가 숨지는 사건이 발생해 아시안 아메리칸과 이민자 소상공인들이 느끼는 공포감이 더 고조되었습니다.

우리 주변에서 비일비재하게 일어나고 있는 비극들은, 우리 커뮤니티에서 가장 취약한 구성원들이 일상에서 직면하는 백인 우월주의, 여성 혐오, 제국주의에 대해서도 우리의 관심을 불러일으키고 있으며: 특히 아시아와 태평양에서 미국 군국주의 존재에 의해 야기되었던 인종 및 성적 착취; 그리고 그 여파로 발생된 지정학적 격변과 강제이주; 이민자, 마사지 노동자, 성 노동자를 무조건 범죄자로 규정하는 사회적 시스템과 그로 인해 개인과 지역사회가 마주해야 하는 공포; 주거와 재정적인 불안; 그리고 이민자, 저임금, 서비스 노동자들이 매일 직면하는 생활 속의 불평등과 위험이 도사리는 작업환경들에도 우리가 더 관심을 갖도록 하고 있습니다.

온전한 치유를 위해 우리는 진실과 맞서고 폭력과 증오의 근본적인 원인인 백일 우월주위와 여성 혐오를 다각도로 다루어야 합니다. 불편을 감수하고라도 이중성에 대해 논의하고 바로 잡아야 합니다. 이는 일부 피해자와 커뮤니티가 고통과 두려움 속에서 구금을 목적으로 하는 경찰력을 증가, 증오 범죄 입법 및 기타 처벌들을 요구할 권리가 있다는 것을 인정 함 동시에 이러한 대응들이 다른 한편으로는 공공 안전을 위한다는 명목 하에 우리 지역사회와 구성원들을 범죄시 하고, 어떤 해를 끼칠 수 있는지에 대해서도 의문을 제기하는 것을 의미합니다.

진실과 맞서는 것은 우리 아시안 아메리칸 커뮤니티 안에 내재되어있는 반흑인 정서를 조명하는 것을 의미하기도 합니다. 우리는 애틀랜타 총격 사건의 비극의 여파가 경찰력 집행을 확대하는 정책과 흑인 커뮤니티에 불균형한 영향을 미치는 것을 용납해서는 안됩니다. 오히려, 흑인, 라티노, 원주민, 아랍, 태평양계 커뮤니티들과 함께, 우리 공동체를 위해 정의, 치유, 사랑, 그리고 희망을 새롭게 정의하고 함께 잘 살 수 있는 커뮤니티를 만들어야 합니다.

지난 1년간, 우리는 수많은 이들이 슬픔에 잠기고, 급진적인 변화를 요구하는 목소리에 힘을 실어 가면서 우리 주변의 거리, 공원, 커뮤니티 센터에서 지역사회를 돌보고, 구성원들의 권리를 보호하고, 함께 역량을 증진하고자 연대하려는 메세지와 행동들이 널리 울려퍼지는 것을 목격하였습니다.

우리는, 다 함께 백인 우월주의와 반흑인 정서의 억압을 넘어 모두가 상생 가능한 커뮤니티 환경을 구축해 나갈 것을 다시 한번 다짐합니다. 인종차별 및 성별에 기반을 둔 폭력의 희생자들의 목소리를 내어주는 동시에 우리 커뮤니티 중심의 목소리가 반영된 정책을 만드는 것을 선출된 공직자들에게 요구하여 책임을 물을 수 있습니다. 이는 피해자, 생존자, 그리고 위험에 노출되어있는 이들을 위하고 그들이 사용 하는 언어로, 그들의 문화, 생계, 신분 여부에 민감하게 반응해 움직이는 커뮤니티 기반 조직에 대한 투자와 지원을 포함합니다. 선출된 공직자들은 현재의 위급상황이 누그러지고 나서도 희생자와 생존자 그리고 가족들을 위해 장기적인 지원과 자원을 제공하고, 보상기금 외에도 폭력 예방 프로그램 지원 및 사회 회복적 사법 제도 실행 그리고 공공 보건과 교육에 중심을 둔 인프라와 제도를 제공해야 합니다.

우리는, 다 함께 지역사회의 안전과 치유를 위해, 인종 및 경제적 정의를 위해, 안정적 주거 환경과 양질의 헬스 케어를 위해, 정신 건강과 교육 그리고 생활 가능한 임금을 위해, 투표권과 함께 모일 수 있는 권리를 위해, 그리고 우리 지역의 예술과 아름다움의 보존을 위해 목소리를 낼 수 있습니다. 1주기를  맞이하며, 희생된 이들과 사랑하는 이들을 잃어버린 가족들을 기억하며 애틀랜타를 시작으로 전국과 세계로 확산되고 있는 모든 커뮤니티를 위한 커뮤니티 케어를 더욱 더 확대하고 건강한 공동체를 만들어 갈 것을 다시 한번 다짐합니다.
